Some combinations are just made for each other, like peanut butter and jelly or Ross and Rachel. When we think about vitamin K2 and vitamin D3, also known as vitamin K2D3, we should in fact be thinking about them as better off in a pair than individually.
While supplementing vitamins, especially in a world where we lack necessary dietary needs, it isn’t always as straightforward as taking one pill at a time, despite the individual benefits. What Is Vitamin K2?
There are two components in vitamin K. We have vitamin K1 to help in forming of healthy blood clotting, which is found in vegetables, leafy greens and of course plant oils. We have vitamin K2 to stop the buildup of calcium in our tissue. When we think of this vitamin we need to be thinking of animal products, dairy and fermented foods. Our bodies do produce only a limited amount of vitamin K in the colon.
Our diet very much depends on whether or not we will be deficient. A K2 deficiency could be considered dangerous and should be monitored or supplemented.
Although we call D3 a vitamin, it technically isn't a vitamin and scientifically goes by a unique name. According to Medical News Today, we call it a “prohormone, or precursor of a hormone.”Why? Because vitamins are typically not produced in the body or only produce a minuscule amount. Vitamin D, on the other hand, can be produced in our bodies. Even so, that doesn’t mean as a society we aren’t incredible deficient. Which PubMed states we are 41% deficient as a country (135 million people).
Foods like fatty fish, dairy products, mushrooms, egg yolks and fortified food contain smaller amounts vitamin D, but we gain most of ours from the sun. Therefore, no sun means not a whole lot of D and a deficiency can equally cause a few health issues.
Should K2 Be Taken With D3?
The short answer is yes.
As stated above, studies have indicated the benefits of taking these two vitamins together, especially on cardiovascular health and bone health. An NCBI also states, “taken together, animal and human studies suggest that optimal concentrations of both vitamin D and vitamin K are beneficial for bone and cardiovascular health as supported by genetic, molecular, cellular, and some human studies.”

K2D3 Side effects
In most cases, the main side effects you could develop are allergic reactions to the products which can include:
- Itching or swelling
- Trouble breathing
- Severe dizziness.
- Nausea or vomiting
- Constipation or an upset stomach
However, this type of reaction is very to each their own as it depends on how your body will handle each vitamin.
